Hai C. Tan, AIA | 1969 Original Design

In his contribution to California architecture, Hai Chuen Tan designed within the midcentury milieu. He blazed trails among a handful of Asian architects who worked during his era, establishing his self-named firm in Fullerton circa 1963 and joining the esteemed American Institute of Architects. In 1969, Tan was commissioned by Jack Lee to design his personal residence at 1933 Redcliff Street in Silver Lake. A prominent business owner in LA’s Chinatown, Lee was developing a commercial property at 970 N. Broadway and again commissioned Tan, who expanded his midcentury aesthetic to include traditional Chinese themes. Mandarin Plaza, 1972, remains a community hub to this day, and with 1933 Redcliff Street is a testament to Tan’s enduring vision.

Anthony Anderson | 2018 Renovation + Guest House Addition

The founding principal of Anderson Architects LA, Anthony Anderson’s interest in design started at an early age. He earned a degree in civil engineering at Columbia University in New York, then moved to Los Angeles for his graduate studies at SCI-Arc. The pioneering spirit of California was inspiring for Anderson, as were the clean lines of midcentury modern design. After working for award-winning firms RIOS and Kevin Daly Architects, Anderson established his own practice with a focus on residential work. His thoughtful renovation of the Jack Lee Residence was guided by his desire to create a modern and effortlessly functional home for his own family, while at the same time honoring Hai C. Tan’s wonderful original design.
