Originally conceived in 1947, the Wallace Neff Shell House is the last standing example in the United States of Neff’s Airform construction method, in which reinforced concrete was gunite-sprayed over an inflated balloon mold and allowed to set into a seamless dome. The technique was Neff’s answer to the postwar housing crisis: economical, fast, and formally unlike anything that came before.
