Originally conceived in 1947, the Wallace Neff Shell House is the last standing example in the United States of Neff’s Airform construction method, in which reinforced concrete was gunite-sprayed over an inflated balloon mold and allowed to set into a seamless dome. The technique was Neff’s answer to the postwar housing crisis: economical, fast, and formally unlike anything that came before. What emerged was not just a shelter but a new category of architecture — part structure, part sculpture, and very much its own thing.

Inside, the curved shell organizes the home with surprising grace. A circular half living room opens from a central fireplace, flowing without interruption into the kitchen and bath. The two-bedroom plan is compact but never cramped; the form creates its own sense of expansion.
